Popular Science Horizons|into the World of Tellurium

1. [Introduction]
Tellurium is a quasi-metallic element with the symbol Te. Tellurium is a silver-white crystal of rhombohedral series, soluble in sulfuric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia, potassium cyanide and potassium hydroxide, insoluble in cold and hot water and carbon disulfide. High purity tellurium was obtained by using tellurium powder as raw material and extracting and refining with sodium polysulfide. The purity was 99.999% . For semiconductor device, alloys, chemical raw materials and industrial additives such as cast iron, rubber, glass, etc.

2. [Nature]
Tellurium has two allotropy, namely, black powder, amorphous tellurium and silvery white, metallic luster, and hexagonal crystalline tellurium. Semiconductor, bandgap 0.34 ev.
Of the two allotropy of tellurium, one is crystalline, metallic, silvery-white and brittle, similar to antimony, and the other is amorphous powder, dark gray. Medium density, low melting and boiling point. It's a nonmetal, but it conducts heat and electricity very well. Of all its non-metallic companions, it is the most metallic.

3. [Application]
High purity tellurium single crystal is a new type of infrared material. Conventional tellurium is added to steel and copper alloys to improve their machinability and increase hardness; in white cast iron, conventional tellurium is used as a carbide stabilizer to make the surface tough and wear-resistant; lead, which contains a small amount of tellurium, is added to the alloy to improve its machinability and increase its hardness, it improves the material's corrosion resistance, wear resistance and strength, and is used as a sheath for submarine cables; adding tellurium to lead increases its hardness, and is used to make battery plates and type. Tellurium can be used as an additive for petroleum cracking catalysts and as a catalyst for the preparation of ethylene glycol. Tellurium oxide is used as a colorant in glass. High purity tellurium can be used as an alloying component in thermoelectric materials. Bismuth telluride is a good refrigerant material. Tellurium is List of semiconductor materials with several telluride compounds, such as cadmium telluride, in solar cells.
At present, the industry of cdte thin film solar energy is developing rapidly, which is considered as one of the most promising solar energy technologies.
